bluemeans that artistic skills reach the highest level just like the highest temperature when ingle becomes pure blue.
“Roka Junsei” means that artistic skills reach the highest level just like the highest temperature when ingle becomes pure blue. The art of Satsuma Kiriko (kiriko: cut glass) born in Kagoshima around the end of time of samurai in the 19th century. The lives of cut glass artisans who still carry on the ephemeral technique are exactly “Roka Junsei.”
Their endless training for honing skills to their limits to pursue expressions of Satsuma Kiriko.
This is the reason why Satsuma Kiriko still fascinates people today.Under the aegis of Nariakira Shimazu, the 28th head of the Shimazu clan, Satsuma Kiriko was born as exports and developed to an advanced industry.
With its roots in Britain, Bohemia, and China, Satsuma Kiriko is receiving a high evaluation in the history of world’s glass artcrafts due to their features such as “gradation” expressing Japanese delicacy.
The technique of Satsuma Kiriko, which was lost once in the turbulent time around the end of Edo Period, was revived since 1985 and Satsuma Kiriko produced in Kagoshima became a world-class brand. In our factory, cut glass artisans with traditional skills are creating works every day.
Welcome to the world of Satsuma Kiriko. Its sparkle, history, and technique are fascinating many people. I am one of those who were fascinated by its attraction and entered a career as a cut glass artisan to be a creator. When a cut glass artisan questions the value of a Satsuma Kiriko that he/she created, the evaluation is made from both inside and outside the artisan. This is why the time for creating works is eternal to cut glass artisans.
Improving the technique up to infinity to seek the highest sparkle called “roka junsei” in their creation. It is an endless challenge for which artisans sacrifice their lives. Our cut glass art studio Deshimaru has cut glass artisans going through such lives. Young artisans who aimed to be a cut glass artisan and became our disciple are also honing their skills here. The technique of cut glass artisans has been taught as a technique for tracing tradition. However, we have been creating new values by our improved technique.
It is reinterpretation of the traditional technique as one that fits in the demand of the time. It is a way to use their lives that has been finally found in this Heisei Period by cut glass artisans who are keeping the tradition. We deliver new sparkle created from their lives to many people.
